Mayor Landrieu commemorates Hurricane Katrina 9th Anniversary tomorrow, August 29, 2014
NEW ORLEANS, LA – August 29, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — TOMORROW, August 29, 2014, Mayor Mitch Landrieu will participate in events across the city in observance of the 9th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and to highlight the progress in rebuilding the city.

Wreath Laying Ceremony
At 8:30 a.m. Mayor Landrieu, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Julián Castro, elected officials, community and civic leaders will lay wreaths at the Hurricane Katrina Memorial site where nearly 100 unclaimed or unidentified victims of Hurricane Katrina are interred. The Hurricane Katrina Memorial, a project of the New Orleans Katrina Memorial Corporation, was built in 2008 to provide a permanent memorial honoring those who lost their lives in the devastating hurricane and to lay to rest the unclaimed or unidentified victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Delgado Community College – Sidney Collier Campus Ribbon Cutting
Mayor Landrieu will join leaders from Delgado Community College and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System to cut the ribbon on the new Sidney Collier campus. The program begins at 9:52 a.m. in commemoration of the time flooding began in the area during Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. The $21 million Delgado Community College – Sidney Collier campus, located in Florida-Desire area of New Orleans between Gentilly and the Ninth Ward, replaces the former Louisiana Technical College Sidney Collier campus that was devastated by floodwaters during Hurricane Katrina and subsequently demolished. Delgado’s Community College – Sidney Collier campus seeks to help revitalize the Florida-Desire neighborhood by serving as a pathway for residents to obtain job skills and employment.

Beacon Light Ribbon Cutting
Mayor Landrieu will join Interim New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison at 6:00 p.m. for a ribbon cutting celebration and grand opening of the new Beacon Light International Baptist Cathedral. The site was one of the hundreds of New Orleans churches severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Since January 2005, Beacon Light International Baptist Cathedral has hosted services in several temporary locations while they worked to rebuild their Mirabeau Avenue location. Friday’s event marks Beacon Light’s return to Gentilly after nine years.
