On Thursday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, City and State officials and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) will celebrate the opening of the Marigny portion of Crescent Park with a ribbon cutting of the Mandeville Crossing pedestrian bridge and elevators. The Mandeville Crossing is an elevated walkway crossing over the Mississippi River floodwall and active railroad lines and connects Elysian Fields Avenue to the Mandeville Shed and Ellipse.

Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-South Louisiana), issued the following statement after officials in five Gulf States announced they had reached a settlement agreement with BP for $18.7 billion after the BP oil spill in 2010. The settlement will go toward resolving Clean Water Act penalties and damage claims as well as settling outstanding economic claims. In a press conference today, Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell estimated Louisiana would be able to recover approximately $10 billion.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro announced on Monday that the City of New Orleans has been selected as a finalist to compete in the second and final phase of HUD’s National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC). Aligned closely with a companion education and technical assistance effort by the Rockefeller Foundation, HUD’s competition is designed to help states and local communities recover from past disasters while improving their ability to withstand future extreme events through strategic community investments.

Rep. Richmond (LA-02) announced the release of additional disaster recovery grants for infrastructure repair work resulting from a re-evaluation of Hurricane Katrina related damage. These grants, funded through the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be used to restore roads, streets, and bridges throughout New Orleans.

Friends call Lynne Zane, 68, "Captain Zane" because of her career as a boat mate with the U.S. Coast Guard. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1.5 million grant to the city of Walker, Louisiana, to upgrade water services and road access to the Walker industrial park. According to grantee estimates, the project will create 200 jobs, save 859 jobs, and generate $25 million in private investment
