City Urges Residents to Protect Themselves, Homes from Mosquitoes

The City of New Orleans is reminding residents of the precautions they should take to protect themselves and their homes from mosquitoes, which are known to transmit diseases like Zika virus, West Nile and chikungunya. Because of the recent heavy rainfall and high temperatures in New Orleans, the city is at a greater risk of seeing an elevated number of mosquitoes in the area. At this time, there are no locally transmitted cases of the Zika virus in New Orleans or Louisiana; however, travel-related cases have been identified in New Orleans and elsewhere in Louisiana. Additionally, there are no cases of West Nile or chikungunya in New Orleans.

City Successfully Secures Final Settlement of $1.2 Billion from FEMA to Repair Hurricane Katrina-related...

Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that FEMA has obligated $1.2 billion in recovery funds to repair Hurricane Katrina-related damage to New Orleans’ roadways and subsurface infrastructure, including water, sewer and drainage pipes. The settlement of $1.2 billion in previously unobligated recovery funds brings the total to over $2 billion secured under the Landrieu Administration for roads and subsurface infrastructure. Mayor Landrieu and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate announced the agreement on the final settlement in December 2015.

Vitter Announces $2.6M for Infrastructure Improvements to Louisiana Airports

U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will be awarding multiple grants totaling $2,356,267 to fund projects to improve Louisiana airports in Concordia, Richland, and Bossier Parishes. Additionally, the State of Louisiana will receive a grant of $300,000 to conduct a study identifying Louisiana airports with additional development needs. The Federal Aviation Administration will be responsible for allocating the funding to the State of Louisiana and all three airports.

City Sells all 18 Available Properties During June Adjudicated Property Auction

On June 1, the City of New Orleans held its monthly online auction for adjudicated properties, which brought in more than $184,500 after 28 individuals bid on the 18 properties that were for sale. Fifteen bidders won 18 auctions with nine going into extended bidding. A total of 660 bids were placed with the highest priced auction at $31,061. Winning bidders received full ownership and title insurance for each property. The next auction is scheduled for Wednesday, July 6, 2016.<

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure advanced a slate of bills today, including a bipartisan disaster relief bill authored by Reps. Garret Graves (LA-6) and Stacey Plaskett (D-V.I.). The legislation, H.R. 1311 is designed to help communities recover from disasters and increase disaster program transparency and oversight
