Mayor Landrieu, City Officials Celebrate Opening of Newly-Renovated Nix Library
NEW ORLEANS – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Mitch Landrieu and City officials celebrated the reopening of the newly-renovated Nix Library (1401 S. Carrollton Ave.) This $320,000 investment includes technological upgrades, infrastructure changes and a new floorplan.
“Since 1930, the Nix Library has been an anchor in the Carrollton neighborhood serving generations of New Orleanians,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “This celebration is testament to our commitment to ensure residents have access to the resources they need to thrive in this community.”
The Nix Library opened on November 29, 1930 as the New Orleans Public Library system’s sixth library location after a long campaign by Carrollton residents to bring library services to their neighborhood. Since its opening, the Nix Library has benefited from its strong ties with the community and has offered a wide array of materials, services and programs including monthly author nights, a Magic Treehouse Book Club for children and daily computer assistance.
Since 2010, the City of New Orleans has reopened, rebuilt, renovated or added 14 libraries across New Orleans totaling over $42 million. These libraries are part of $321 million worth of capital investment made by the City.
District A Councilmember Susan Guidry said, “The Nix Library is a true community library and a vital resource in District A. The long awaited, extensive renovations to this historic structure, as well as the technology upgrades, will enhance the community’s learning experience.”
The Nix Library has been under renovation since October 2016. The renovation project consisted of a number of facility repairs and upgrades including new interior paint, plaster repair, floor replacement, new lighting, a new water fountain, plumbing and electrical work, and new hardscaping.
Additionally, the library was redesigned to include new furniture, new shelving, new equipment, a self-checkout machine and five additional public computers.
Executive Director of the New Orleans Public Library Charles Brown said, “The renovation of Nix Library is something that we’ve been planning for quite some time. The residents of the Carrollton area truly cherish this library, and we are proud to now offer them such a beautifully renovated and updated building to enhance their library experience.”
The Nix Library is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m.–8 p.m. and Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
