Tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, the City of New Orleans will begin glass recycling in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District (DDD). Empire Services, the City’s collection contractor in these areas, will begin collecting glass on Thursday of each week from properties eligible to receive sanitation services from the City. Eligible residents and small businesses can utilize blue or black bins with the imprinted recycling logo.

Beginning at 10:00 p.m. tonight, the St. John the Baptist Parish Utilities Department will shut off water pressure to water customers located in Water District #1 (Reserve, Garyville and Mount Airy), and begin making repairs to a main water line. Water pressure is expected to be restored within 6 to 8 hours.

The City of New Orleans is in the process of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan, which provides a detailed overview of the risks that the City faces from hurricanes and other storms events, chemical spills, etc., as well as outlines the strategies to reduce the effects of those hazards on people and property. Through implementation, New Orleans will improve its ability to cope with hazards and emerge as a more resilient community—both during and outside of crisis.

The House Committee on Natural Resources held an oversight hearing in New Orleans, LA, on the current state of offshore oil and gas activity in the Gulf of Mexico. The panel received testimony from U.S. Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), industry representatives, and the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE)

Mayor Mitch Landrieu has signed into law an ordinance to amend the City’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO) to promote development of more affordable housing in New Orleans. Under this CZO amendment for zoning districts that permit multifamily dwellings, developers are now allowed to build denser residential developments as long as a portion of units are committed to housing residents whose income falls below certain levels based upon the Area Median Income (AMI).

New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board advised residents, businesses and motorists that the lakebound side of Nashville from Cucullu Street to Claiborne Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday September 5th, 2015 beginning at 3 a.m. while Wallace C. Drennan Inc. doing work for the Sewerage and Water Board will be repairing a 48-inch water main at the intersection of Nashville and S. Claiborne Avenues.

On Sept. 2, the third in a series of innovative online monthly auctions for adjudicated properties brought in over $3.25 million after 345 people placed more than 12,500 bids to buy 145 of the 146 properties that were for sale. In addition, 15 delinquent accounts of $408,646 were paid in full in the weeks leading up to the auction. The next auction, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, currently includes 111 properties scheduled for sale.

The City of New Orleans will host its third in a series of online monthly auctions for adjudicated properties on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., subject to a rolling close in the case of last-minute competitive bidding. The City is scheduled to sell about 155 properties throughout the community, where winning bidders will receive full ownership and title insurance for each property. The City also reminds residents that there are over 1,000 properties still available for deposit to begin the research and notification processes before an auction may be scheduled.

The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) has begun the application process for the 2016 Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) funding round with plans to award approximately $5 million in 9% tax credits in November and another $5 million this spring

Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued a statement following the announced collaboration between State of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development, Disaster Recovery Unit and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide additional construction assistance and administrative remedies for Road Home Program grant recipients who have not yet returned to their homes, not yet elevated or are otherwise non-compliant with the Road Home Program.
