Boil Water Advisory Issued for English Turn and Lower Coast Algiers

-

NEW ORLEANS – June 2, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB) has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for English Turn and the Lower Coast section of Algiers. Residents in the affected area are advised not to drink, make ice, brush teeth, bathe or shower, prepare or rinse food with tap water unless it has been properly disinfected until further notice.

During yesterday afternoon’s heavy rain event, a 12-inch water main ruptured, which was located in a forebay of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ managed Algiers Lock between the Intercoastal Waterway and the Mississippi River.

Upon discovery, S&WB crews immediately closed the water main. S&WB crews worked through the night and this morning to raise the water pressure in the area. S&WB crews were not successful in raising the pressure above the 15 pounds per square inch (psi), which is the threshold established by public health officials for issuing a boil water advisory. S&WB is taking active steps to minimize any health risk by exercising valves to increase water pressure.

Out of an abundance of caution, a precautionary boil water advisory has been issued for English Turn and the Lower Coast section of Algiers until the water pressure stabilizes above 15 psi. Once water pressure is stabilized, S&WB and DHH officials will begin testing water samples.

Customers in other areas of the city are not affected and do not need to boil their water.

Please see the attached map for the affected area.

S&WB is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair the water main as soon as possible.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice for customers in the affected area. S&WB will notify resident when the advisory is lifted. If you have any questions, please call 52WATER (529-2837).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOILING WATER
Boil water for one full minute in a clean container. The one-minute boil time begins after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (If there is a flat taste, it can be eliminated by shaking the water in a bottle or pouring it from one container to another.)
