Big Wins for Louisiana in WRDA 2016

U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding today’s passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 (WRDA) out of the U.S. Senate. WRDA 2016 will help improve flood control, water infrastructure development, and coastal hurricane protection throughout Louisiana. After today’s overwhelmingly bipartisan passage, the legislation will head to the House of Representatives, who could vote on the legislation next week. As Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Vitter was essential in authoring and advancing WRDA 2016.

JEFFERSON PARISH SELECTED FOR $28.9M FOR ELEVATION /RESILIENCE GRANTS

Jefferson Parish has received notice of selection through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Flood Mitigation Assistance program for four (4) project applications with 36 reconstruction properties and 115 elevation properties that meet FEMA’s priorities described below. This total of $28.9M is the largest federal share to a single jurisdiction in this 2016 funding cycle. In addition to elevation and reconstruction components at each identified location, Jefferson Parish has included climate resilience mitigation measures such as rain barrels, pervious pavement, and bio-swales into the applications in an effort to assist with erosion control and water retention

City Urges Residents to Protect Themselves, Homes from Mosquitoes

The City of New Orleans is reminding residents of the precautions they should take to protect themselves and their homes from mosquitoes, which are known to transmit diseases like Zika virus, West Nile and chikungunya. Because of the recent heavy rainfall and high temperatures in New Orleans, the city is at a greater risk of seeing an elevated number of mosquitoes in the area. At this time, there are no locally transmitted cases of the Zika virus in New Orleans or Louisiana; however, travel-related cases have been identified in New Orleans and elsewhere in Louisiana. Additionally, there are no cases of West Nile or chikungunya in New Orleans.
