Tomorrow, the City of New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways will host the Big TREEsy Giveaway presented by Entergy and in conjunction with NOLA Tree Project and the Sewerage and Water Board

The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) board of directors awarded $12.1 million in funding Wednesday to finance the construction and rehabilitation of 952 housing units of affordable housing. The $129.5 million in total development costs is powered by LHC’s issuance of $12.1 million in tax credits which generated $117 million in private funding.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined City leaders, residents and subject matter experts to announce a working group to help find solutions to the City of New Orleans’ long-term infrastructure needs. Established by Executive Order by Mayor Landrieu, the Fix My Streets Financing Working Group has been charged with developing recommendations about how the City can pay for interior street repairs.

Dignitaries, developers, and residents celebrated the grand opening today of The Deaconess apartments at 2535 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. Formerly the Bethany Nursing Home, the renovated, 40-unit complex was awarded a $400,000 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) grant in 2014 from First NBC Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas).

The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB), in consultation with the state Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH), has cancelled the precautionary boil water advisory for residents and businesses on the Eastbank of New Orleans after bacteriological tests confirmed that water in the area is safe to drink and can be used normally for personal needs

Tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, the City of New Orleans will begin glass recycling in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District (DDD). Empire Services, the City’s collection contractor in these areas, will begin collecting glass on Thursday of each week from properties eligible to receive sanitation services from the City. Eligible residents and small businesses can utilize blue or black bins with the imprinted recycling logo.

Beginning at 10:00 p.m. tonight, the St. John the Baptist Parish Utilities Department will shut off water pressure to water customers located in Water District #1 (Reserve, Garyville and Mount Airy), and begin making repairs to a main water line. Water pressure is expected to be restored within 6 to 8 hours.

The City of New Orleans is in the process of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan, which provides a detailed overview of the risks that the City faces from hurricanes and other storms events, chemical spills, etc., as well as outlines the strategies to reduce the effects of those hazards on people and property. Through implementation, New Orleans will improve its ability to cope with hazards and emerge as a more resilient community—both during and outside of crisis.

The House Committee on Natural Resources held an oversight hearing in New Orleans, LA, on the current state of offshore oil and gas activity in the Gulf of Mexico. The panel received testimony from U.S. Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), industry representatives, and the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE)

This Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, the City of New Orleans will auction four City-owned properties in the City Hall Council Chambers at 10 a.m. The Department of Property Management through the Division of Real Estate and Records will conduct the auction. Registration begins at 9 a.m

Mayor Mitch Landrieu has signed into law an ordinance to amend the City’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO) to promote development of more affordable housing in New Orleans. Under this CZO amendment for zoning districts that permit multifamily dwellings, developers are now allowed to build denser residential developments as long as a portion of units are committed to housing residents whose income falls below certain levels based upon the Area Median Income (AMI).

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recognized two Louisiana groups for accomplishments in working to prepare their communities for emergencies. New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps won the award for Outstanding Citizen Corps Partner Program in the 2015 FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards. The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana received an honorable mention in the category of Technological Innovations.
